No White Party: New mag is aimed at real gay men
by Harriet L. Schwartz
Calling his new magazine “a cross between Details and Cosmopolitan, with a touch of Attitude," (a British gay publication) editor-in-chief Gabriel Goldberg says that Instinct will fill a void left by other gay magazines.
"It isn't as heavy-handed as the Advocate and not as celebrity-driven as Out," says Goldberg whose past experience includes an editorial position at Genre.
"The whole point is to read it and have a good laugh," Goldberg said in a recent phone interview. "Read about things that speak to you as a gay person, but with the idea that there's more to you than being gay."
Goldberg says that one of the problems with other gay magazines is that they create expectations about what it means to be gay in the 1990s. This is another reason why he is committed to Instinct.
"If we have how-to columns, we're not going to tell you how to live," he said. "We're not going to judge you and tell you that
you're supposed to go to the gym and to circuit parties and drive a red Jeep. We're not going to tell you that you're supposed to find a boyfriend and get married-or stay single and screw as many people as possible. Be yourself and enjoy."
Instinct includes regular features targeted toward gay men ages 21-38, on health and fitness, love advice and electronics, as well as movie, book and music reviews. The magazine is likely to fulfill the editor's promise of providing a few good laughs with columns like "The Chick You'd Switch For."
Premiering with a December issue, the bimonthly Instinct is starting with a circulation of 30,000. Finally, Goldberg hopes that readers will see themselves reflected in a magazine.
"We hope it's different than Genre,” he said. "A lot of it is written in the first person and we hope people will read it and say, 'I know, I've been there.' The regular gay male out there, what's he going through? Things are a little more real than the White Party in Miami."
